Weekend events




This page is our calendar of weekend events. Please note that most events now start from the front of Chapter Arts Centre in Canton and not from outside the National Museum of Wales, Cathays Park. This is because Sunday parking charges have been introduced in central areas.

Many of our walks are in places remote from civilisation. It's your responsibility to have suitable clothing and footwear for bad weather.

If you would like to bring children or dogs, please check first with the event organiser.

Unless otherwise specified, a packed lunch should be brought along on day events (often shown as "BPL".

The grade of the event refers to the terrain, not the distance, which is shown separately. This and some other information is shown in the key below.

To find out more about any event, please phone the event organiser. If no phone number is given, please email us or phone a member of the committee, shown below.

New members are welcome at events.

August

Saturday 6th

Tretower & Pengenfford Walk - 17 lovely miles from Tretower topping out at Pen Cerrig- calch, Pen Allt-Mawr and the always noticeable Mynydd Troed. Option of a camp on Saturday night at Cwmdu to join a GMC walk (16 miles) on Sunday.

Sunday 7th

The Far Side of Gower Walk - An 8 mile walk taking in the wildly beautiful and rarely visited North Gower including LLanrhidian sands, Weobley Castle and views of the Loughor estuary from the viewpoint of Arthurs Stone. BPL.

Parc Penallta (Nelson) Walk - 8 miles crossing the open countryside of Eglwysilian common with views into the Rhymney and Aber Valleys, taking in Parc Penallta, Senghenydd dyke and Llanfabon church.

Sunday 21st

Three Castles Walk - 20 miles approx. linking Skenfrith Castle, Grosmont Castle and White Castle following woods and hills and taking us over Graig Syfyrddin for views of the Welsh Marches and the mountains of South Wales.

Friday 26th to Monday 29th

August Bank Holiday weekend- We will be at Newport Youth Hostel for 3 nights, within striking distance of Carningli and The Preselli Mountains. Good Pubs and beautiful countryside and coast! Book your place ASAP as space for 12 in 2 dorms for 6 per room. Cost is £49.20 per person for 3 nights.

Saturday 3rd

Save our Reservoir Walk - Choice of 3, 6, 12, 17 or 21 mile walks to raise funds for the Reservoir Action Group. Entry fee applies (between £2.50 to £12 depending on the route chosen). See www.socrw.co.uk.

Sunday 11th

Llangattock Walk - A 12 mile walk through one of South Wales' best kept landscape secrets - Craig y Cilau nature reserve that has hills, cliffs, moorland, caves and peat bog. Why are they there? All will be revealed….. BPL and a torch.

Sunday 18th

Senghenydd Horseshoe - A 9 mile walk with historical interest along the quiet ridges north of Caerphilly including Mynydd Meio and Mynydd Eglwysilan. Pub at the end! BPL.
Leave Taffs Well rail station at 9.30am (if without a car, get the 09.00 train from Cardiff Central to Taffs Well).

Sunday 25th

Craig Cerrig-Gleisiad Walk - 8 miles around the side of the Brecon Beacons' most spectacular nature reserve, after which the route goes past Storey Arms and returns via an old coach road. This is a lovely walk which avoids all the crowds on the other side of the A470. BPL.

Backpack Weekend - the empty quarter - 2 days of backpacking around the hills between Hundred House and Painscastle, one of Mid Wales' finest quiet areas.

Sunday 2nd

Usk and Bettws Newydd Walk - A 10 mile walk in the quieter parts of the Usk valley with plenty of wildlife, including kingfishers, and views from the higher ground to Bettws Newydd. There are 2 pubs en route which your leader is likely to visit. BPL.

Sunday 9th

Redbrook Ramble - A circular 7 mile walk overlooking the Wye valley taking in Penallt old church, a delightful mini arboretum and a tea stop en route at "the Inn at Penallt". BPL.

Saturday 15th

Bath Skyline Walk and Prior Park Landscape Garden - A 7 mile waymarked circular walk. Savour the magnificent views down into the picturesque World Heritage City of Bath, walk through history from an Iron Age hill fort to 18th century follies and stroll through the peace of hidden valleys, tranquil woodlands and patchworks of small meadows all rich in wildlife. BPL. Afterwards we will have time to look around Bath and have an early evening meal. (Optional).

Friday 21st to Sunday 30th

Free National Trust property in the Beacons - Two consecutive weekends and a mid-week of free accommodation at the National Trust's property along the Taff Trail south of Brecon. The weekends are for the usual COGgers, the mid-week period for young COGs.

Friday 25th to Sunday 27th

Manchester weekend - Join us in this city centre hostel at bargain rate of £16.95 per night for half board (less than usual rate for B&B). Travel by public transport - train or bus. Lots to see and do including canal walks, industrial heritage, art galleries or just spend the time in one of the many real ale pubs.

Friday 26th to Monday 29th

New Year weekend will be spent in a bunkhouse (sole occupancy) in the centre of St Davids, Pembrokeshire. 3 night stay from 30 December is £30. There have been many enquiries to date so places are limited
Fully booked, but you can still book a B&B in St. David's and join us for the walks & New Year celebration, just contact Lyndon to let him know.
